Almond Oil – Sweet vs Bitter – What is the Difference?
There are 2 types of almond oil, sweet and bitter. Each comes from it’s own variety of almond tree. Sweet almonds has a longer slender shape while the bitter almonds are shorter and more fuller. Each are processed and used differently.
Sweet almonds are either expeller pressed or cold pressed into a fixed oil. Both methods are broken down using mechanical pressure. However, the cold pressed is done at a lower temperature helping to maintain it’s nutrients.
The fixed oil of the sweet almonds is a medium- light oil with a very light scent. It works well in as a massage oil, a lubricant or a moisturizer due to it’s richness in minerals, vitamins and proteins. This is a wonderful carrier oil and for all skin types.
Bitter almonds are distilled to create an essential oil from the plant. Essential oils are typically used for scent. This works well for scenting soaps or other homemade products you want to have a nice nutty smell. Bitter almonds have the potential to contain cyanide, benzaldehyde and amygdalin possibly making it toxic. When using bitter almond oil make sure it is a food grade product and is completely safe.
I hope this has helped you understand the differences between the two types of almond oil. In short if you want the benefits of the nutrients use sweet almond oil. But, if you are looking for the nutty scent you need to use the bitter almond oil. Which ever you choose enjoy these great oils and have fun experimenting. You never know what wonderful things you may create.
